Sports Premium/Grant

Take a look here at all the funding information we receive towards PE and sports in school and our action plans.

PE and Sports Premium

The government provides additional funding for all academic years. It is to be used to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to primary school head teachers. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • Buying resources that will enhance PE provision at Lower Park
  • Developing more active PE provision at lunchtimes

The Sports Premium Grant (SPG) is government funding to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of all primary-aged pupils, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, sport and physical activity they provide.

This means that you must use the PE and sport premium to:

  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now are sustainable and will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
  • develop or add to the PE, sport and physical activity that your school provides

Key indicators

There are 5 key indicators that school need to use the funding to ensure improvements in:

  1. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  2. Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
  3. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and physical activities offered to all pupils
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport
